Tips for Successfully Renting

Before You Sign

Never sign a lease under pressure. Read every clause carefully, ask about anything unclear, and do not pay any money before seeing the property in person. Verify that the person renting to you is the actual owner or a registered agent — ask to see the title deed or their agency licence.

• Inspect the property in daylight and check all taps, lights, and locks

During the Tenancy

Pay your rent on time and always request a written receipt. Report maintenance issues in writing and keep copies. Be a considerate neighbour — noise complaints are a leading cause of early lease terminations. Keep common areas clean and follow the house rules.

When Moving Out

Give proper written notice as specified in your lease. Clean the property thoroughly, remove all your belongings, and return all keys. Request a joint inspection with the landlord to agree on the condition of the property before leaving. This significantly reduces deposit disputes.

Avoiding Common Scams

In Kenya, rental scams are common — particularly online. Never pay a deposit before viewing the property, and never pay to a personal M-Pesa number without verifying the identity of the recipient. If a deal seems too good to be true, verify independently before committing any money.
